INVITATIONS HOME

Mauritians are more likely to invite you home for a meal than they are to invite you out. If you are invited, you should make every effort to accept the offer—this is a great opportunity to meet a friend’s family and to experience a healthy dose of Mauritian hospitality.

Etiquette will vary according to the host’s background, but it would be polite at least to offer to remove your shoes before entering the house. In terms of dress, smart-casual clothing is normally appropriate; in general, you should avoid wearing anything that could offend people’s sensibilities (no beachwear or short skirts, for example). If you want to bring a gift, a bottle of good wine would be appropriate for a Francophile Mauritian; otherwise flowers, a cake, or cookies are fine when visiting someone who doesn’t drink alcohol. Gifts are gratefully received, even if they aren’t always expected.
